Arcángel (Huelva, 1977) is one of the most highly acclaimed voices in contemporary flamenco. A professional cantaor since the age of 15, he has forged a career defined by a rare combination of deep-rooted knowledge of flamenco tradition and a constant drive for exploration. His discography— from Arcángel to Hereje, including La calle perdía, Ropavieja, Quijote de los sueños, Tablao and Al este del cante—reveals a restless spirit who is able to engage with tradition whilst projecting it towards new sonic horizons.
He has graced the most prestigious international stages, such as Carnegie Hall, Sadler’s Wells and the British Museum, and has also performed in cities and countries as diverse as Miami, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Lisbon, Bogota, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates. His accolades include the Latin Grammy for Best Flamenco Album for Al este del cante, the Gold Medal of Andalusia, the Gold Medal of the Province of Huelva and the Giraldillo Award from the Seville Biennial. His participation in Flamenco Real, together with the Alalá Foundation, highlights a shared vision of flamenco as both living heritage and a tool for human transformation.
La Fundación Alalá
The Alalá Foundation is a non-profit organisation founded in 2015 in the Tres Mil Viviendas neighbourhood of Seville, with a branch in Jerez. The foundation works to promote the social integration of children, young people and families at risk of exclusion, through education, culture and sports. Reflecting its commitment to education based on values, identity and emotions as tools for future progress, its name, Alalá, means ‘joy’ in Caló, a language spoken by the Romani people in Spain.
Flamenco is its primary tool for transformation. Through its art school, Alalá provides free training, personal support and scholarships to foster the educational and artistic development of its students. With over 400 children, young people and adults participating in the project, the foundation has become a benchmark in social inclusion through culture, demonstrating that art can foster self-esteem, discipline, talent and hope.
